The emerging US foreign is slowly emerging and is resembling a muscular defence of western  interests, be it countering Iranian  influence or  his recent about turn with regards to Syria and Russia. This bodes well for UK foreign policy as it broadly begins to align  with the British position on foreign affairs. With regards to taking a tough line against Russia and the Assad regime.

There is a strong element of superpower brinkmanship and this has already put some significant countries to further militarise. Case in point being Germany who are under pressure to increase their defence spending to 2% of GDP. In practice this amounts up to 60 billion Euros,  the west is under pressure from the Trump doctrine about increase of defence expenditure to the NATO  2 % target. It is vital for this increase if the conventional form of deterrence in the east of Europe is to be effective. Western solidarity and resilience is vital to protecting values that we in the West hold dear, liberty, free speech, and freedom of expression. Also what is needed is the political will to back up the kinetics of it when Red lines have been crossed,ie hard military power. Interoperability  of NATO forces is key when it comes to countering aggression from the east and the terrorist threat from the middle east.
