If we were in the EU there would be more money around to help people at the margins who struggle, the EU contributed money to development funding in some left behind areas. Johnson didn’t bother properly with levelling up.
Who knows, maybe parts of the north of England need developing in the way that East Germany was post 1990. Though they were able to do that as they were in the heart of the EU.
The issue is we can’t have a Scandinavian system here as people aren’t prepared to pay the levels of tax they have in the Nordics for example. Maybe if people’s salaries were a bit higher people might be able to accept Scandinavian levels of taxation and public sector it brings.
The cultural factor with this is how the UK is a strange hybrid between an Americanised and European one, with more competition for resources plus the UK’s bigger population density with more people fighting over less resources in less space which encourages more of an assertive American mentality. Compared to nordic nations like Sweden, Norway or Finland’s social cultural construct.
